Why, Oh Why...

Why is it so difficult to write about yourself? I'm trying to write up a quick bio for the article challenge and also for another project that I have in the works, but everything sounds so corny when I talk about myself in the 3rd person.

I have confidence in myself and my abilities as a writer, but finding a way to express that seems to be one of the most difficult things I ever have to face. Am I the only one who feels like they are playing off-key when they try to toot their own horn?

If anyone has any tips and tricks for writing a bio without sounding like a jerk, please share!

Ooh, ooh, I have an answer!!

This article on Absolute Write http://www.absolutewrite.com/freelance_writing/bio.htm\is for people submitting manuscripts, but the tips apply to any kind of author's bio.

One thing I like to do is target my bio for the market... so the first line of my bio for www.theWAHMmagazine.com is "Dawn Allcot works from home as a freelance writer."

If it's for a paintball magazine, I'll mention my team name.

I read other author's bios in the magazine or on the Web site to see how personal to make it, or if it should just cover the professional basic.

I hate writing bios, too. But they're a necessary evil and, by targeting them the right way, you can get some great marketing mileage out of them.

Thanks so much! I bit the bullet and wrote it. It seems a little short, but at least its something. I can add more to it later, when I need to use it again.
